Suspect Mass air flow meter - Help 200 1982

Model 240 GLT just purchased and is now running very bad, when stationary the engine will not "rev up". Disconecting the Mass Air flow meter causes the car to rev and run correctly. Checked the resistance measurments on the Mass Air Flow meter and all are within tolerance. A volvo tech said we need a knew one probably because he read the error code.
What damage do we do if we run without it in circuit? Could it be something else that is not working?
