Drove my 84 in for it's first 'enhanced' NJ emissions test a couple of weeks ago; it failed. I had avoided it two years ago due to some problems with the testing at major inspection stations. Anyhow, my failure was for NOx reading extremely high. I figured the cat was a good candidate. Taking off a catalytic convertor after 18 years of use was not easy, but I prevailed. The old cat was empty; no evidence of any ceramic/catalyst. Must have just fallen apart over the years. Reinspection passed; although my numbers are marginal. The limit is 1323, my reading was 1315. Was just wondering from any of you brickheads what else could be driving the number up. Does this car have an EGR? My O2 sensor & air mass meter were replaced about 3 years ago to cure a poor idle/acceleration problem. The car runs fine. The replacement cat cost me $83 from ABC Discount Auto.
