gas smell 700 1989

I have a '89 Volvo 740 GLE 16 valve...The car runs fine and has lots of power...the only problem is that it smells like unburned gas...the car has no gas leaks...I checked the plugs to see if it was running rich, the plugs looked fine...I've changed several things already like the fuel regulator, in tank fuel pump, air mass meter, catalictic converter and the ECU (replaced with a used unit)...do you think it could be the oxygen sensor? or the ECU? Can someone tell me how to check the oxygen sensor? I have bad gas mileage and the smell gets into the car when idleing and is very noticable after the ignition is turned off...After the car cools down, the smell is gone thats why I believe its not a gas leak...I try to do all of the repairs myself because here where I live there are only two repair shops and they dont have a good rep...Please help if you can your replies will be greatly appreciated...Aloha from Hawaii
