How do you get seat belt through new side pockets??? 700 1990

I just purchased a new driver's side map pocket for my 1990 740 GL. Tyring to figure out how to replace it. Do you go from the bottom up, or through the top down? Do you have to unwind the belt from the retractor spool? Any suggestions would be helpful.
