Hi all, I have a 68 122 wagon that I've only have a month or so. I've been driving it to work and back to shake out any gremlins, and I've found a few that's stumping me. First off, this is what I've done before finding problems(when I got it, It barely ran)
*Rebuilt and rebushed both carbs, jets appeared good.
*Adjusted and balanced said carbs with a Unisync
*Adjusted valves according to Haynes
*New points, plugs, rotor, cap, and air filters
*Ignition timing set to spec with a timing light
I have a B18B with a mechanical advance distributor. I had the dist. out, and it is marked "009" not "007" as I was told it should be. I know from past experence that a "009" is the hot setup for air-cooled VW's so this is a puzzler. My commute is about 5.5 miles, one way, sorta stop and go with speeds of about 45-50 and about 12 traffic lights. I live in Central Ohio so it's still about 30F in the mornings to 50F in the afternoons. The car always starts and idles fine, but even after 15-20 minutes of warm-up, I still need to use the choke at traffic lights until I'm about 3/4 mile from work(or home). My Temp gauge just touches the middle green bar no matter how long I drive it. I get plenty of heat, though. Now, on with the problems!
*the power "fades" on take-off when "just" at operating temp and no choke.
*with steady gas petal pressure it sometimes "hunts" or is a little jerky
*diesels when shut off, even though I retarded the ignition about 2-3 degrees, and use high-test gas.
*seems to be using a LOT of gas. I've driven 55 miles on this tank, and seem to have used nearly half!
*if I have to give it more gas, and slip the clutch some on take-off due to "fading", I feel like I'm getting axle tramp.
*I get odd "whrrrr" sounds from under the passenger seat only when car is cold, and I'm coasting out of gear(like toward a stop light)
I'm sorry this is so long, but if someone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks,
John Rayl
