M46 OD's and gearbox splines.

I have a few questions in regards to random changes Volvo made during M46 production. I have rebuild a cast-iron M46 box and now I planned to rebuild a P type OD for it. I ran in to a snag because the splines of the P-type planetary gears do not jive with the output splines of my M46. The old shaft has "lumpy" splines, the new one has "sharp" splines.

What makes the P type OD stronger than the J type?

Do all P-types have "sharp" splines? Do all cast-iron M46's have "lumpy" splines? When did they make the switch.

Can I take the planetary gears from a J-type and put them in to the P-type?

Please answer as many questions and make comments too. Thanks in advance,
