How to check/drain AC compressor? 200 1986

In reading the AC posts on Brickboard, I've learned that I need to bypass my reciever/dryer to see if my compressor works. I figure that this means connecting the two leads that normally are plugged into the reciever/dryer. Is this correct?

Also, I'm going to convert to R134a. Can I drain and refill the oil from the compressor while it is mounted, or do I have to remove it first?

Finally, where do I buy the proper ester oil for the conversion, and does anyone have a favorite supplier for the conversion kit?

Thanks.
