For the first time in my life, a car that I own failed to take me home! (Other that the wreck where I went to the hospital and the car to "recycle".)
Sunday afternoon, the car just died with no warning. It would idle at about 50 RPM for a little while when I attempted to restart, but eventually was completely dead. I pushed the little valve in the diagnostic port on the fuel rail and determined there was no fuel pressure. Tapping the fuel relay and others got no response so I had the car carried back to the house and pushed into the garage. Later that evening I traced power all the way to the pump but it wasn't running.
On Monday I got a new pump and tank unit seal at the dealer. Thanks to the Volvo manual the job went without major pain and I got the car started before I went to bed that evening. (Without the manual for guidance don't try this one, it's "specialized" and could have easily become a disaster!)
Anyway....., what kind of life have others had for 960 fuel pumps? I'm curious to know if one should start carrying a spare at 80K or replace it if reliabilty is paramount?
