replacing just ring gear vs whole flex plate 200 1993

When one's ring gear gets all chewed up (no names here), not just in 2 spots but in many spots and it has to be replaced to prevent that horrible noise coming from the starter gear dancing along the ring gear, why is it that the mechanics I talked to all said to replace the whole flex plate ($300) versus just the ring gear ($100)?? Should I suspect the usual profit motive or is there a balance of the whole unit that takes place that they don't want to have to mess with?
Thanks,
Robb
