Antenna Mast Replacement on 740 Wagon 900

I'm confused. I thought I just had to remove the nut and cap, then pull the mast out. It wont come out. The new mast has a brass ring slightly larger than the mast. Inspection of the old mast still installed has no sign of this ring. Must be inside the cable sleeve. So then how do ya get it out.
