Temp gauge @45° 200

Hi guys & gals,

I just recently bought an '89 244DL. It has consistently run with the temp gauge at a 45° angle (below avg.?) instead of at the normal 90° angle, like my 245. I took off the pre-heat hose and one day I left it ideling on a hot day with the A/C on. When driving off the temp gauge shot up. I put the pre-heat hose back on and it seems to be back to a 45° angle. This morning it was running at the normal 90° angle. What is going on? I understand when I take the hose off I have to check to make sure the flap is not stuck in the closed position. I haven't gotten around to doing that ... that's why I put the hose back on. Any ideas?
