1980 After gas gauge moves off 1/2 mark, gas is gone in a few miles??? 200 1980

Hi All, I drove my 82 DL for 11 years and never experienced this before. But here it goes, The gas gauge in my 80 244 DL seems to act normally above 1/2, a gradual useage of fuel, but below 1/2, its like its pouring out the bottom, And when I go to the gas station it takes a good 11 gallons or more, so it is low.
Anyone know why?? Its a weird one. I have checked all over for leaks and couldn't find any. I would think it should leak above half as well??
