How to get the %$&&*!! radio out? 200 1993

Trying to upgrade to a nice Kenwood CD player (just finished installing its twin in wife's 740) in my "new" 93 245. I've removed the glovebox and find that there is a soft metal lip extending from the radio into a slit to a metal bracket anchored to the firewall. After losing much skin and one fingernail bent back (my classical guitar playing will be shot for a while), I still have not gotten it out. Is there some trick,manueveur or incantation I am missing? Perhaps something involving animal sacrifice?
Any help will be deeply appreciated.
