Turbo Question (Disabling?) 700

I have a daily driver that I just put a ton of time into. New Time belt, Motor mounts, all seals, bushings, etc. Just realized the turbo is bad too. When used it leaks like crazy, also dumps oil into the intake manafold. A friend tells me hey no problem, just unhook it. Can i do this? I know I'll loose power, but will it wreck anything. Eventually I'll fix it, but have a baby on the way and money is tight. Plus it's just a daily beater

It's a 87 740 intercooled turbo.
