Ignition...vroom....dead 200 1981

Hi -
My lovely volvo has developed this little habit...First starting usually involves ignition (no excessive effort to get initial ignition), a nice vroom, and then a quick drop of RPM and then splat. nothing. If I rev her for five seconds or so she'll stay running after that, but there's usually a dip of rpms below normal after taking my foot off the gas. Is this a bimetallic strip on it's way out? Or something else?
