Stinky volvo 200 1981

My 1981 240 DL stinks! Actually it has been a great car for 230K miles but has developed the smell of exhaust inside when the windows are partly open. As far as I can tell, the exhaust is coming from the hole that the manual transmission shifter comes through. I don't seem to have any leaks in the exhaust system.
Any ideas?? Thanks in advance. Tim
