tachometer woes 120-130

I have a 123 GT tachometer that is giving me trouble. It was very flipid for a while and now is pegged and gets warm when vehicle is running or key is turned. Can anyone offer a conceptual explanation for this?....besides "damn, sounds like your tach is broken, man".
