Running Rich 200 1985

Hi There
I have an'85 240DL with a B230F (121,000K) that started to sputter just after I got some fuel. I thought that it was possibly water and so put in additive to take care of the problem. It continued for several days and one morning when I turned it over---that is all it did turn over. I tried this many times but until I added some injector cleaner to the gas got nothing. It now runs but is litterally sucking gas, sputtering etc. I can keep it going ok if on a level surface or a downhill grade but once it goes up the speed goes down and the sputtering continues with any amount of fuel increase. It usually forces me to pull over for traffic to pass. There is no Volvo dealer near me (600km) and although many mechanics have offered advice they all add that it is just a guess as they aren't familiar with it. Most have suggested that the air flow is screwed up or blocked and or the oxygen sensor is gone. The haynes book gave the analysis plug location and I haven't found it. So I am trying to see if someone out there might suggest an elimation process to follow. Also am i hurting the car if I continue to run it with this problem..it is nothing but hills here(up or down 1000 feet). I had a bad exhaust and replaced it rear of the "Y". Suggestions please
Thanks
Doug
