I use my 80 DL mainly as a bad weather car (to keep my M3 and 944S out of the winter elements). On snowy and/or cold mornings, I typically will start the car 15 minutes or so before I'm ready to leave and turn on the defrost to clear the windows and heat the inside up. One morning I get into the car that's been running for those 15 minutes or so and hear a sound that appeared to be the fan blower motor going bad. I turned off the blower switch and the sound went away. I went ahead and drove to work, on the way testing the heater a few times. Each time I tested, the sound was still there. Upon ariving at work, I turned the motor off, but just to check one more time I turned the fan switch on (key on -- motor off) AND THE CAR STARTED!! The sound was still present until I turned the blower off. As it turns out, the sound I was hearing was not the blower, but the starter -- which was engaged. Needless to say, now I have 2 problems; a short somewhere in my wiring and a damaged starter (car still starts, but the starter is hard to engage). Anyone ever had this one, and if so where did you find the shorted wires--or perhaps another problem?
