Gas smell in car, not from the back 200 1993

my dad has been trying to figure out why his car smells like gas for years now, I am finaly looking into it. Is it possible to have a bad fuel evaporative control canister? and how would I be able to tell? If you have any idea's for me please let me know, this damn thing is killing me. I need to save the 240. Mother doesn't want hime driving a car that smells like this. The 240 must live on.
