Should I be able to hear my own turbo? 700

This is only the 2nd turbo equipped car I have owned. The first was a 2001 VW Golf TDI, turbo diesel. I could easily hear the turbo spool up on it. But I can't hear it on my 88' Volvo. I haven't done any mods, so its stock should I be able to hear it? It's automatic as well, does it make a difference? Sorry, this sounds dumb but I'm just wondering.
