Changing AC from R12 to R134a 200 1983

Right. This has probably been asked a zillion times, but I have a couple of queries that may not be covered in the FAQs.

1) Can you tell the type of compressor (i.e., rotary vs. conventional) by sight, and what are the telling characteristics?

2) Are those $39 charging/retrofit kits compatible with an '83 240 DL?

3) Where is the "low-pressure" side of the charging system, anyway?

4) My AC unit is the one with the clear sight-glass thing on the passenger side of the radiator. Is there any hope?
