Avoiding the need for the 'Jiggle Test'

Sounds like something my GP does...or on South Padre Island....
but seriously, what does one do to avoid having the flame trap and oil seperator plug up with crud?
Does changing oil often make a difference? Synthetic oil?
What can I do to my 93 245 to keep from having to do any "Jiggle Test"?
Thanks,
el Raidman
