Engine Has Got a Mind of its Own-Revs Whenever it Wants 700 1988

Unfortunatley it looks like I'm going to have to drop more money into maintnance costs of my car rather than suspension or driveline upgrades. The car is an '88 744 gle with 176k. This week I noticed that the damn engine will rev on its own at any moment. It will do it an any speed, in any gear. It will rev to about 2000 rpm, sometimes just hitting 2k rpm and dropping back, sometimes staying a 2k rpm for a few seconds. I can feel it while driving in the seat of the pants, so I'll pop in the clutch and sure enough it will be revving, then drop back down and I'll be on my way again. At red lights its really annoying and has caught me off guard while in first gear a few times. Just yesterday I noticed that when this does happen you can hear a clicking sound from the computer in the passenger footwell. Hope I don't have to replace that puppy. Can anybody offer me any insight in how to fix this problem?
Thanks for any help.
