What components are involved in the Fuel Guage System? 200 1983

I have a 1983 DL Sedan, and the fuel guage does not work at all; it sits on empty all the time. What components, other than the guage itself, could be problematic, and does anyone have any tips on how to go about checking them? Is there any way to check the guage itself? Thanks in advance for anyone that can help out there...
