Clutch performance, inconsistent 700

Hi,
the clutch on my 1986 745T with M46, 170K miles is fair at best. Often times it is very difficult to engage first, and other times it engages easier. Pumping the clutch pedal doesn't seem to make any difference. Is it still possible I have a bad slave cylinder or should I be suspect of the clutch assy itself???
