Connector on rear diff? 900 1993

As I said in my previous post on inop fuel gauge, it appears that the wire bundle from the fuel tank goes to a connector on the rear diff cover plate. Am I wrong? What is its purpose? I hope to get it on a lift in the next few days & try to figure what caused my gauge to read empty when full of fuel. Has worked fine since I shook out wiring.
