Two ES questions 1800

Hello all, I have two questions regarding my ES;

1) did they originally have a pressboard panel that was affixed over the gas tank ? (Our '68 coupe has one and I think it's a good idea)

2) I would like to hear about steering effort from anyone running wider than stock wheels, such as the Turbo rims. My car has a rebuilt front end, ipd's lowering spings & sway bar, and steers like a truck. It would definitely benefit from wider tires, but I don't want the steering effort to go off the scale.
