Volt gauge Reads too high

Hi
I just picked up a 89 Turbo Wagon .... 134k, a beauty.
Had the AC serviced (R12-134a...?)
The coil was not re - installed correctly. The next thing I know there
is something on fire .... It's me. Well, the car anyway.
A lot of smoke.
A lot of wires melted ... car needed a tow.
Everything seems to be ok now ..... Except that the volt gauge reads high after I have been on the road for a while. I noticed that the air bag warning light does't come on either.
I get the feeling there are a lot of things that i don't know here.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Allan
