rear tranny seal question----car on jacks now 200 1988

Hi all-

First time doing the tranny seal and bushing, and all has gone well so far. Before I started, I read as much literature as I could find, plus the FAQs. But I have run into one problem.

Everything that I have read indicates that the seal "will come right out". The situation that I am in now is that is not happening. I can't get the seal out with a screw driver, and when I try, it comes out in pieces. Actually, I got the "lip" of the seal out, the part that faces toward the drivetrain, but the inner section of the seal will not budge. There is a slightlt raised bronze colored metal piece that goes around the secation between the lip and the inner part of the seal. It looks like that part is holding it in, and not allowing me to access it. So, what now? I tried reaching in (between the bronze colored thing and the bushing, but I can't get in there. Do I push the bronze thing off, put the seal on it, then press it back in? I have the car on jacks now, and a reasonably quick answer would br greatly appreciated.

Thanks-

Joe HC
