Tapping Noise 700 1991

I have a 91 740 sedan and recently I've been hearing what I thought was an engine tapping noise.....when I took it to my local mechanic, he listened with a stethoscope and it was obvious the tapping was coming from the ignition coil which I had recently replaced. I then replaced the coil again and after another week or so, the tapping started back up. Can anyone share any insight on what the problem could be? Thanks for all your help.
