Thermostat -- 87 or 92 deg? 200

I just did a whole mess of work to my car, including a new thermostat. When I was buying parts I saw two thermostats listed - 92 deg and 87 deg. I assumed that the 92 was standard and the 87 was for people who wanted to run cooler. I'm not a big fan of second-guessing the engineers on things such as engine running temp, so I opted for for the 92 (again, thinking it was the standard thermostat).

Now after putting it all back together, my engine runs a little on the hot side of the gauge.

New radiator
Electric fan conversion
New water pump
New hoses
New thermostat
Bypassed the temp compensating board.

Hose temperatures are in the 170-185 deg range
Gauge needle hovers around 2/3.

With the hose and radiator temperatures seemingly within reasonable ranges, I'm not very worried about it, but since the gauge is higher than normal I do wonder if I shoud switch to the colder thermostat.

Does anyone know which thermostat is *supposed* to go in the car?

Thanks

-Steve
