Car did it's job - now what to do? 700 1990

My wife had an accident today taking kids to dentist. She was turning left at intersection when fire truck came up with all the lights and sirens. When she moved to get out of the way she was T-boned by Honda coming the other way who didn't even slow down. Nobody hurt, Honda a write-off. The Volvo was hit low on right rear passenger door & quarter, rocker panel pushed in about 12 in., wheel destroyed, axle & suspension badly out of line and the body has a noticeable twist to it. It's a shamae, the car had no rust & was in mint condition. Wrecker says it is not repairable, so I guess I am now looking for another.

I know and understand the RWD cars. Is it worth looking at the FWD models? Do they last like the 240/740? I do most of the maintenance myself so I don't want something too complex.

You guys are the experts, what do you think?
