Tranny temp. sensor replacement tips needed 900 1996

I loosed my tranny temp sensor the other day but decided to retighten it back on. I just could not reach the spot by hand to install the new one. Looks to me, the only possible way is to remove the exhaust pipe to get access. I would appreciate any tips to complete the job. (The wiring socket was impossible to open too. Can I soak it with WD40?)
