simple question about new tires 200

has anybody ever heard about a problem about using a tire on a different side of the car after it has been used a while on one side of the car (reversing the direction of the tire). I have heard from a few people that say that doing that on tires will cause the tread to separate. Is this true? Or can new tires do that?>
