Press down gas pedal and not much of a respose 200 1985

I have replaced battery, new plugs and wiring, pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel pump relaly, and alot more. Now when she starts, after several tries, I give her gas and she wants to die on me. Sounds like it wants to backfire, and I can smell an odd odor. It smells like varnish. I really need to get it going. This has been going on for about two months. I just had a liver transplant, and I'm trying to get me Volvo going so I can get back to work.
