Tailshaft seal 200 1982

I am curious if anyone here has installed a tailshaft seal with a slightly smaller ID when the there is a significant groove worn in the sealing surface. I had installed a new seal when I had exchanged gear boxes over winter, but the seal has been defeated and now the street in front of my house looks like I have been parking the beetle out there. Plus, on longer trips it is annoying to have to check fluid levels in a manual box. Any ideas, beside having the tailshaft built back up and turned back down? Thanks.
