A/C repair 900

My wife has a '95 960 and the AC is not working. This may not sound so bad to some of you, but we live in North Carolina, where it's been 95 degrees and super humid for about 2 months straight! The Volvo shop tried to recharge it without success, and they say it'll be $750 to fix it.

They say it's expensive because of the labor and special equipment necessary. Is this the only way to do it?
