gas gauge has pissed me off for the last time 700 1989

i'm pretty sure this is a common occurance, but i can't seem to find any posts relating directly to my situation in the faq, or the history. my '89 760ti wagon has had a prob with the gas gauge for years, and now i just can't take it anymore. basically it'll work when it wants to work. i thought it was the sending unit until i realized when i hit the instrument cluster in a certain way, it would work, then die out again 2 minutes later. so i took the instrument cluster out, inspected, and resoldered all the connections, but it still doesn't work. so i am pleeding to anyone out, how the hell do i fix this?
i'm one of those paranoid types of people that can't drive comfortably without knowing how much gas is in the car.

thanks,
rob
