I need to do something with the front end of the wifes 91 740 (L-O-N-G overdue). Tie rods look ok but might as well do them while I'm into it, all the bushings and both ball joints need to go in the trash and thought I'd try the struts as well.
Question 1: Am I money ahead to buy a front end bushing "package" that contains them all or should I plan to get each one separately? My front end nomenclature leaves a lot to be desired but in studying the 740 diagram on Groton's website, I'm confused about what I think is the sway bar as what I have doesn't match the picture exactly. This is the bar that runs across the front end of the car and is attached to each side of the frame by shackles/bushings after which it turns toward the firewall and has sort of "S" shape before it joins a short, vertical steel rod, threaded on both end. Each end of this short rod has two small bushings (not much larger than a quarter) with washers on each end. Sorry if this makes no sense. Wondering if someone can give me the name of these small bushings from this rambling description as I'm pretty sure I know the names of the others.
Question 2: I have a large impact wrench, pickle fork and a 20 ton press plus access to a spring compressor. Is a bushing cutter worth having on hand?
Finally, the struts: are KYB struts sufficient for "average" preformance? The wife really doesn't need super preformance, just a smooth ride and decent handling. And is the large nut on top of the strut tower (under the hood) the one that one needs to loosen with an impact wrench but not remove prior to removing the strut assembly from the car? This is what I understand from the FaQ's
Many thanks in advance!
