What's the advantage of a 3' exhaust system???? 700 1989

Bricksters:
I just have located the parts (Flowmaster pipe and muffler) to weld up a 3" exhaust system with a single muffler from the cat back. Price is about $135. The OEM system with 2 mufflers is about the same price after shipping.
Now, -please wax philosophical- and tell me what's the advantage of either one.
Horsepower gain?
Noise levels ?
Durability?
Coolness factor?
