740 transmission problem 700 1987

I recently purchased a 1987 740 Turbo with automatic transmission. It appears to shift late. It wind up ok and eventually shifts but shifts hard when it does finally drop into gear. This is only for the 3 and fourth gear shifting 1st and 2nd seam to shift normally. I can force it shift earlier in the wind up by letting off slightly on the gas. opinions?????
