Another 960 Trans Fault Question 900

I am new to my '96 960 and have read about various trans faults, but if someone could refresh me just what this means:

1) Instrument panel arrow flashing.
2) Lights alternating between "E" and "W" on trans selector
3) Switch positions "E" and "S" will stay depressed when depressed, but "W" will NOT stay depressed.

The trans "seems" to shift normally.

The fault occurred when I manually selected low gear and accelerated to about 3000 rpm (with a fully warmed up engine).

Does this sound like a "real" or "sensor" fault?

How would I research this in the archives (key words to enter?) if no one can presently assist?
