The speedometer went out on the wagon a few weeks back. I finally got around to trying to see if I can fix it. What I tried:
Continuity between the speedo head wires and the sender connection. OK
Ohm reading of sender at rear connection. 3.19 k Ohms. This is outside the range indicated in the Bentley book.
drove around with the voltmeter on the sender wires on the instrument cluster. It was roughly 3.5mV at 15 MPH. It did rise with increase in speed.
Removed speedo from instrument cluster to inspect the plastic gears. They look fine.
I was reluctant to take off the sender. Also, I did not check the clearance of the sender.
Given this information, what advice can anyone give me? I'm thinking I'll just take it to a mechanic on this one. But I fear they'll go the expensive route, when a simple approach would do just fine.
Thanks.
