240 Speedo Question 200 1986

The speedometer went out on the wagon a few weeks back. I finally got around to trying to see if I can fix it. What I tried:

  • Continuity between the speedo head wires and the sender connection. OK
  • Ohm reading of sender at rear connection. 3.19 k Ohms. This is outside the range indicated in the Bentley book.
  • drove around with the voltmeter on the sender wires on the instrument cluster. It was roughly 3.5mV at 15 MPH. It did rise with increase in speed.
  • Removed speedo from instrument cluster to inspect the plastic gears. They look fine.

I was reluctant to take off the sender. Also, I did not check the clearance of the sender.

Given this information, what advice can anyone give me? I'm thinking I'll just take it to a mechanic on this one. But I fear they'll go the expensive route, when a simple approach would do just fine.

    Thanks.
