240DL engine knocks 200 1989

I just replaced an M47 transmission, and now my engine is hard to start and knocks. It lacks power and does not idle. I did not do anything to the engine. The engine fault code says 1-1-1 which means no recorded messages. I pulled the first plug and it was coated with soot, indicating a very rich mixture. When cranking over the engine, it sounds as if one or two of the plugs are firing early, making it difficult to turn the engine over. When it is running, I can hear spark knock, similar to knocking on an engine with advanced timing. When I pulled the transmission, I noticed the vacuum line to the flame trap had become disconnected. I cleaned the flame trap and reconnected the line. I'm puzzled. I cannot-and did not-change the timing on the engine. Even when I remove the hold-down screw and rotate the distributor, there is not much difference. I believe it is a computer-related issue. When I put a timing light on the number one plug wire, the timing light will only trigger when the engine speed is increased. Before I replaced the transmission, the engine ran fine. I have 200,000 miles on the car.
