Thanks for the tip--you were absolutely right. I did remove the flywheel to grind the surface--and failed to check the position when I put it back on. I had a 1-in-8 chance of getting it positioned correctly. I pulled the trans and repositioned the flywheel according to the manual. I have never had a vehicle that required the flywheel to be in a certain position. The engine idles without knocking, so that fixed the problem.
Now I have a new problem--it only idles and does not rev up when the accelerator is depressed. The linkage is working correctly, but the engine does not respond. I will go through the nine possible causes of "poor engine power, fails to rev up" outlined in my Bently manual.
