Just installed a NEW temp sender, temp gauge still dead! 700 1989

After reading the FAQ for the 700 series, I suspected the coolant temperature sender...ordered one from FCPGroton, installed after destroying original one. BOOHOO, gauge still reading zero. Could it be a wire or is the gauge itself dead...how to check for life in the gauge??
