high beam switch 200

Both the high beam headlights in my 1979 242 do not switch on when I move the lever switch backwards on the steering column. Can the switch and electrical contacts on the steering column be dirty and not makin g contact ? how do I clean them if this is my problem ? what else could be causing the high beams to not turn on ?
