crap... system voltage now at like 12 200

A few days ago it was a pulsing/dim battery light on the instrument panel... now the voltage in the car has dropped... could this be brushes, or something far worse? If it is just brushes, how hard to replace, and if it is the whole unit... how much for a new alt?
